Kagiso Shanduka Foundation Trust steps up

Partnering with the Free State Department of Education is underway in the Fezile Dabi and Motheo districts
This joint venture between Kagiso Trust and Shanduka Foundation has led to the development of an enhanced delivery model that combines the strengths of both their programmes being the Beyers Naud├ę School Development Programme and the Adopt-a-School Foundation and uses the principle of whole-school intervention.
Earlier this year a memorandum of understanding was signed between Shanduka Foundation and Kagiso Trust and the Kagiso Shanduka Foundation Trust was formed. Shortly thereafter, the trust signed an agreement with the Free State education department.
Kagiso Trust and Shanduka Foundation have committed R100 million each over a five year period to improve infrastructure and learner performance in schools in the two districts. The Free State education department will match this with R200 million.
Work is now well underway and the trust has appointed the University of Free State to conduct detailed needs assessments in all 371 identified schools.
An empowerment and transformation leadership workshop retreat was recently held with district officials. This retreat aimed to induct officials into the programme and share the vision of the collaboration, assist officials to develop better school support mechanisms, and ensure accountability from school level to district level and to provisional level. School retreats will now take place with all educators, School Governing Body members, principals and the Learner Representative Councils.
These retreats will provide the platform for schools to identify their own challenges and formulate clear strategic action plans. They ensure a strong accountable team spirit is developed and the schools and district teams set and agree on targets around learner performance.
Following completion of the assessments and the retreats, basic infrastructure and critical skills development needs will start to be addressed in each school. The ultimate aim of the collaboration is to develop a working model that can be replicated across the country.
