“Global to Local – the People’s Right to Peace”
Our Network hosted its 2nd Peace Forum on Friday, 19th September 2014, in partnership with UNASA (United Nations Association South Africa) at the Gugulethu Sports Complex. It was a day spent celebrating International Peace Day (21st September).

This created awareness for the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs replacing the Millennium Development Goals) incl. peace and security, facilitating UNASA’s first pilot Community Dialogue to collect people’s understanding of and needs for peace and security, and their input into the post-2015 Agenda as well as share peace success stories from the grassroots level.

Karen Barensche from our member SA Peace Alliance gave an introduction to International Peace Day which included a video message from UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon's.  Karen also lead us through a peaceful Grounding/Cohesion exercise.  This was followed by Claire Wilson, who facilitated her special Peace and Reconciliation labyrinth which all participants were open and curious to walk for their inner peace journey.

In comparison to the first Peace Forum last year, which was only for our member NGOs, this year local NGOs, partners, community members and local government were also invited. It was a very successful event with ca. 55-60 participants joining us and thereby doubling the attendance from last year. We received media coverage through a joint press statement published by UNASA, a Ground-Up article and radio interviews together with UNASA representatives before and after the event, on Soli Philander’s The TAXI radio station. UNASA is currently preparing a joint statement of the event and is also looking forward to building a partnership with the Peace Network for joint Peace advocacy campaigns.
