Thales SA donates R1,7 million to Community Chest to advance STEM futures of 6 Cape Flats schools
French engineering company Thales has partnered with Community Chest by donating R1,7 million to help six schools on the Cape Flats increase their Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) capabilities. This partnership has resulted in the schools improving their results dramatically over the last 3 years of this 5 year partnership.
Joe Slovo High and Sizimisele High Schools in Khayelitsha, Khanyolwethu High in Strand as well as Malibu High and Forest Heights High Schools in Blue Downs and Kleinvlei High School in Eerste River all saw their STEM matric results improve over the last 3 years respectively. At Joe Slovo High, a school that is fraught with crime and gang related violence and in a community where 13 year olds experience violence with abnormal regularity, it was inspiring to see the school achieve a 100% matric pass rate in 2016.
Improving the STEM results at these schools would not have been possible without the Thales donation of three science kits per school to the value R 20 000 per science kit. In addition to building the STEM culture at these schools, Thales allocated R 1 million towards bursaries to six deserving matriculants to study at any South African University in Science, Technology or Engineering fields. Four students each received R 100 000 bursary to study at the University of Stellenbosch, two more received a R 100 000 each to study at the University of Cape Town and four students each received R 100 000 to study at the University of the Western Cape.
At the recent bursary handover event, Thales CEO Justice Tootla spoke with enthusiasm about the partnership with Community Chest and its impact on the schools and students. Community Chest Partnership Manager Titania Fernandez says the Thales Partnership is proof of what can be achieved if meaningful partnerships are formed to break generational cycles of poverty and exclusion and resources are intelligently used to prepare students for the 4th Industrial Revolution.
