One of these determined youngsters is Sipho Collen Sithole, 23 years of age, from Langa in Cape Town. Image:  Eastern Cape kids get once-in-a-lifetime opportunity High School learners given first experience on a plane and of London in a charity school exchange.

Twelve students from Ntafufu Senior Secondary School, located in the community of Lusikisiki, in rural Eastern Cape, will be flying to London this evening, as part of a London-based student exchange charity called BOTH (Broaden Out Their Horizons). For all of the learners it will be their first time getting onto a plane, not to mention travelling overseas.

The Cape Town Science Centre operates under the auspices of the Interactive Science Foundation, a registered Non-Profit company (031-701-NPO) and registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO: 18/11/12/2663) in terms of the Section 18A of the Income Tax Act of South Africa. When comparing results between leafy suburbs and tin-roofed townships, it appears that we have two different education systems operating in parallel. For most learners in township and rural schools, even reaching matric is a feat; only 58% of the grade 2s from 2006 made it to write matric last year, and so, as Nic Spaull explains, the actual pass mark for the matric cohort of 2016 is an abysmal 42%.   Read More...
