Children’s education could be affected
The proposed changes to the Refugees Amendment Bill “restrict and exclude” those seeking to work and study, according to William Kerfoot, an attorney at the Legal Resource Centre. Kerfoot was speaking at a panel discussion in Cape Town on Thursday on section B12-2016 of the Bill and what its implementation would mean for asylum seekers and foreign nationals in South Africa. The event was chaired by the Enhanced Civic Understanding and Engagement Project and sponsored by the European Union.

Mkhize says dept is bogged down by antiquated systems
Cape Town - New Home Affairs Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize says her department is in need of a much-needed digital overhaul to help speed up applications and root out corrupt practices. Mkhize, who replaced Malusi Gigaba in President Jacob Zuma's mass Cabinet reshuffle on March 31, told News24 that her department was bogged down by its antiquated systems.

Customs and excise collection at the centre of a row between home affairs and the finance ministry
The Border Management Agency could soon assume all functions of border control and customs and excise collection, courtesy of President Jacob Zuma’s recent cabinet reshuffle. The issue of customs and excise collection was the subject of a dispute between the home affairs ministry and finance ministry, with the latter wanting the function to remain under the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
